Free remove.bg alternative: remove a background with no account

The short version

What is happening to remove.bg

remove.bg made its name as a single-purpose site: upload a photo and get the subject cut out. It became part of Canva in 2021. In September 2026 it announced the next step, and its FAQ now sets out the details:

• The website closes. remove.bg says its standalone website will no longer be available from 1 December 2026 at 9:00am CET.
• The feature moves into Canva. Background removal continues inside Canva’s design platform. remove.bg names Canva as the replacement for single images and bulk batches.
• The API moves to Leonardo.Ai. The self-service API stops accepting requests on 1 December 2026. Enterprise API contracts continue as normal.
• Unused credits expire. remove.bg says unused pay-as-you-go credits expire on 1 December 2026 and recommends using them before that date.

In practice the quick visit to a single-purpose site goes away. Canva’s Help Center currently lists Background Remover as included with paid plans, so the replacement sits behind a Canva account and a subscription. remove.bg also says more functionality will be added in Canva before the closing date, so check Canva’s own pages for the latest.

How Adly’s background remover works

The tool does one job. You upload a photo, an AI model finds the main subject, and everything behind it becomes transparent.

1. Upload. The photo is sent to Adly’s servers. The work happens there, not on your device.
2. Cut out. The model separates the subject from the background. There is nothing to set up.
3. Preview. You can compare the original with the result before you keep it.
4. Download. You save a PNG with a transparent background. A counter shows how many free uses you have left today.

Uploaded photos are processed and then deleted from Adly’s servers after a short retention period. They are not published and not attached to an account. Your recent results are remembered in your own browser only.

The limits, stated plainly

• 10 uses a day. The free allowance is 10 uses per visitor per day. It is shared with Adly’s other AI tools, such as the image enhancer and the object remover, and it resets the next day.
• One image at a time. There is no bulk upload. If you send several in a row, the tool asks you to wait a few minutes.
• File rules. JPEG, PNG or WebP, up to 5 MB, each side between 256 and 4096 pixels. HEIC photos need converting to JPEG first.
• No fixing by hand. There is no brush to restore or erase parts of the cutout. If an edge is wrong, try a clearer photo.
• Hard edges are still hard. Loose hair, fur, glass and sheer fabric can come out rough, and soft shadows may go with the background.
• It runs on a server. Your photo leaves your device to be processed. If that is not acceptable for a particular image, use an offline tool.
• A security check can appear. The tool is open to everyone, so it sometimes asks you to confirm that you are not a bot.
• Busy days. The free tools share a daily budget across all visitors. On a very busy day the tool can pause until the next day.
• Fair use. Abusive edits of people, and images altered to deceive, are not allowed.

When another tool is the better choice

A free tool with no account is the right fit for a quick cutout. It is not the right fit for everything.

• You have dozens of photos. Canva can remove the backgrounds of up to 50 images in a folder at once, on its paid plans.
• You need to fix edges by hand. Canva has erase and restore brushes for the cutout.
• You need an API. remove.bg points developers to Leonardo.Ai for automated and high-volume work.
• The photo must stay on your device. Choose a background remover that runs fully in the browser or offline.

Tips for a clean cutout

• Use a sharp, well lit photo. Blur and noise make edges harder to find.
• Give the subject contrast. A dark product on a light surface cuts out better than white on white.
• Keep the background simple. A plain wall or table beats a crowded shelf.
• Show the whole subject. Leave a little space around it so nothing is cropped at the edge.
• Check the result at full size. Look at hair, handles and thin straps before you use the file in an ad.
