| Add VAT | Extract VAT | |
|---|---|---|
| Input | Amount before tax (net) | Tax-inclusive amount |
| Formula at 15% | Net × 1.15 = gross | Gross ÷ 1.15 = net |
| Example | 1,000 becomes 1,150 and VAT is 150 | 1,150 returns 1,000 and VAT is 150 |
| When to use it | Pricing a quote from a net cost | Splitting tax out of a receipt or inclusive offer |

Add VAT starts from net: at 15% multiply by 1.15. Example: 1,000 × 1.15 = 1,150 and VAT is 150. Extract VAT starts from gross: 1,150 ÷ 1.15 = 1,000. Do not subtract 15% from gross; that yields 977.50, not 1,000.
| Country | Rate | Current rate in force |
|---|---|---|
| Saudi Arabia | 15% | 1 July 2020 (was 5% from 1 January 2018) |
| UAE | 5% | 1 January 2018, Federal Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017 |
| Bahrain | 10% | 1 January 2022 (was 5% from 1 January 2019) |
| Oman | 5% | 16 April 2021 |
| Egypt | 14% | 1 July 2017, Law 67 of 2016 |
| Jordan | 16% | Standard general sales tax (not EU-style VAT) |
Confirm with the authority before you rely on a rate: exemptions and zero-rating change, and not every supply uses the standard rate.
For rate r: gross = net × (1 + r). net = gross ÷ (1 + r). VAT = gross − net. In Saudi Arabia r = 0.15 so the factor is 1.15. In the UAE r = 0.05 and the factor is 1.05.
This tool rounds each line to 2 decimal places half-up, then sums. Some systems sum first and round once on the invoice. The difference is cents on long invoices. Exempt or zero-rated lines also sit outside this rate, and recoverable input VAT is not deducted here.
In Saudi Arabia registration is mandatory if taxable supplies reach SAR 375,000 in 12 months, and voluntary from SAR 187,500 (ZATCA). In the UAE the mandatory threshold is AED 375,000 and voluntary is AED 187,500 (FTA). Thresholds are measured on supplies, not profit.
From the calculation to the invoice: once net and VAT are fixed, use the invoice generator to issue a document, the end of service calculator for payroll lines, or the QR code generator for a payment link.
If you need an offer page with tax-inclusive prices, build it from Adly landing pages so the ad copy does not mix net and gross figures.
This is not tax or legal advice. The result is educational under the standard rates cited. The competent authority and your contract are the reference in a dispute.
Set the operation to Add VAT and the rate to 15%. The amount is net. 1,000 × 1.15 = 1,150 and VAT is 150.
Choose Extract VAT and enter the final amount. At 15% divide by 1.15. 1,150 returns 1,000 net and 150 VAT. Do not subtract 15% from gross.
The standard rate is 5% from 1 January 2018. Add VAT by multiplying net by 1.05, or extract by dividing gross by 1.05.
Usually rounding: here each line is rounded then summed. An accountant may sum first and round once. The gap is small on multi-line invoices. Also check exempt or zero-rated supplies.
Saudi Arabia: mandatory from SAR 375,000 of taxable supplies in 12 months, voluntary from SAR 187,500. UAE: mandatory from AED 375,000, voluntary from AED 187,500. Confirm your position with ZATCA or the FTA.
